The Six-Time Grammy Winner Putting on a Show in South Florida
Having ended a three-year live performance hiatus with a moving and critically-acclaimed appearance at New York’s 12-12-12 concert for victims of Hurricane Sandy, music superstar Billy Joel today announced a concert at the BB&T Center on January 7, 2014. The concert will be Joel’s first in South Florida since 2009.
Billy Joel is one of the highest grossing touring artists in the world. Having sold over 150 million albums globally, Billy Joel’s music has remained among the most popular in the world. The singer/songwriter/composer is the sixth best-selling recording artist of all time and the third best-selling solo artist.
Last week, Billy Joel thrilled the crowd as he performed his first Long Island concert in 11 years. He also paid tribute to Long Island Cares, the Hauppauge-based charity founded by Harry Chapin that Joel chose to receive proceeds from the sold-out show.
In December of 2012, joined an esteemed line-up of artists at “12-12-12,” a one-night only concert at Madison Square Garden to aid the victims of Hurricane Sandy. He changed the lyrics to "Miami 2017" to make the song relate to all the damage caused by Sandy. In April of 2013, Joel headlined The New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, his second full-length show in the past three years. He went to New Orleans fresh from Sydney, Australia, where he played a full set at the Stone Music Festival. This October, Joel returns to Europe for the first time in seven years to perform three shows in the UK and his first-ever indoor concert in Ireland, at the O2 in Dublin. In December, Billy Joel will receive The Kennedy Center Honor, one of the United States' top cultural awards.
Billy Joel has received six GRAMMY® Awards, including the prestigious Grammy Legend Award. He has been inducted into the Songwriter’s Hall of Fame and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and has received numerous industry awards. His music has also served as the inspiration and score for the hit Broadway play “Movin’ Out” which took home two Tony Awards, including Best Orchestration and Best Choreography. Recently, Joel was honored by Steinway & Sons with a painted portrait that hangs in Steinway Hall in Manhattan. Joel is the first non-classical pianist to be immortalized in the Steinway Hall collection. He played the final concerts at Shea Stadium to more than 110,000 fans. The concerts were featured in the 2010 documentary film, "The Last Play At Shea."
