Sunrise Facts:

• Sunrise was originally known as Sunrise Gold Village, and was incorporated in 1961 by Norman Johnson

• Johnson was appointed mayor by Governor Farris Bryant even though at that point, there were no residents in the village

• Norman Johnson used the “Upside Down House” as a way to attracted buyers to the area

• The name, Sunrise Golf Village was shortened to the more succinct Sunrise in 1971

• Sunrise has the distinct honor of having Florida’s first Ikea

• Sawgrass Mills Mall is the 7th largest mall in the US (2,383,906 sq. ft.) and also the largest single story mall in the US.
